In addition to the 50/50 cost sharing grants to landowners for Defensible Space and Fuel Reduction projects, The Hotchkiss Fire District assists homeowners with help on designing the project. We can help flag of trees, and explain why taking out some trees while leaving others is a good idea. We try to minimize the amount of work required while providing adequate protection from wildfire.

Using aerial photomaps, we can find the areas that can be thinned easily, estimate the acreage and costs to perform the work, and provide marking for the contractors or landowners.

The work can be minimal and looks natural. Note the difference between the forests along the line near the bottom of the picture. That is a property line, and Forest Thinning was performed north of the line, with the original forest to the south. Defensible Space has protected the home.
